Daiga Grantiņa
Daiga Grantiņa is one of the most internationally renowned Latvian artists. She mainly lives and works in Paris. In her works, Grantiņa employs both synthetic and organic everyday materials, revealing their physical and nonmaterial properties and often transcending the boundaries of their traditional usage. Creating sensitively abstract forms, Grantiņa places emphasis on the artistic process itself, in which improvisation with colours, textures, rhythms, space and light becomes an endless game of randomness, leading to unpredictable results and emotional experiences. The artist has a very broad perception of materiality, embracing light as a material in its own right in her objects and sculptures. Light both defines formal boundaries and can be form in itself. In “Untitled,” the formal properties of materials and their compounds play an important role. The irrational symbiosis and layering of matter turns into a gesture, an act of free creativity or a language which allows canvas, wood or plastic to forget about its utilitarian predestination and rise to the level of intangible music.
