Anda Lāce
Anda Lāce’s artistic practice blurs boundaries between painting, performance, sculpture and other visual media. Lāce is one of a handful of Latvian artists who regularly do performances. Both the painting process and the artefacts remaining after the performance, which are important elements of her art, are all performative. “Best of Luck” reflects on matters such as historical memory and heritage. Material objects in which history is preserved are reminders of bygone times. Can we shed the weight of the past or are we fated to carry it forward? Repeating rhymical actions, through the performance the artist draws the audience into a shamanic ritual. She unpacks teacups, clay mugs, crystal bowls, glasses and other vessels from the last century from paper wrappings, then piles them onto a vaulting horse as a sort of altar. The artist’s belief that broken crockery brings good luck adds a magical touch to her work. Dressed in an acrobat’s leotard, Lāce carefully treads along the narrow, unsafe track, simultaneously freeing herself from the weight of the past and gaining good fortune from the breaking objects – best of luck!
This is the first performance acquired for the LNMM collection.
