Andrejs Kalnačs
Andrejs Kalnačs is a member of the so-called “boundary breaker” generation, which entered the Latvian art scene in the 1980s with works commenting on the zeitgeist and social reality. The nervous lines in Kalnačs’ drawn miniature graphics and expressive etchings accumulate a peculiar anxiety, which electrified the atmosphere of the National Awakening. In his works, longing, obsession and agony have transformed into general symbols, while his sarcastic and socially critical message precisely captured the contradictory nature of the time.
In the 1990s, the nervous etched lines in Kalnačs’ works were replaced by more laconic graphic works, which suggest an ironic, pop-artish protest against the concept of original creativity. At the same time, the artist’s formal explorations focussed on spatial creation.
