Andris Eglītis
Andris Eglītis is an outstanding Latvian painter of the middle generation, whose work has involved constant experimentation with a traditional art medium, i.e. painting. In his works, Eglītis focuses on the emotional evocation of a specific natural environment. For his most ambitious landscapes, the artist often uses earth pigments as alternative, authentic paints, while in his sculptures and installation projects he makes the natural ecosystem a co-author. His visual imagery balances between the figural and the abstract, giving his works an unhurried, meditative mood.
In the cycle “Artificial Light” Eglītis develops the idea of light and shade as the main driving force behind the language of painting. The artist shifts the focus of attention from the object to the metaphysics of light, as well as the spiritual and mental dimension of culture, religion and everyday life.
