Dainis Pundurs
Dainis Pundurs is one of the most talented Latvian ceramic artists, who strives continually to expand the boundaries of this medium. Accomplished craft skills and a refined sense of the material have enabled him to create aesthetically attractive and thought-provoking forms. In his ceramics practice, by consistently working with various formative techniques, Pundurs has arrived at the necessity of highlighting and showing the essence and structure of common things.
The works from the series “Porcelain and Conscious Dreams” are geometric formations with a lot of invested work. As if to counter the specific nature of their material, the artist has employed straight, unified details. Like puzuri, Latvian straw chandeliers our ancestors hung from the ceiling for annual festivals, Pundurs’ works are fragile and beautiful. Although they have no practical use – they don’t turn or sway and they probably don’t scare away evil spirits – their azure subtlety retains infinite aesthetic beguilement and substantial mystery.
