Indriķis Ģelzis

Indriķis Ģelzis, one of the most prominent of the current younger generation of Latvian artists, mainly creates objects which could be described as wall sculptures. Although at the start of his career Ģelzis did more video art while experimenting with installation forms, after studying at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, he turned to abstract sculpture. As he has developed his style, he has created spatial objects from metal, MDF, natural wood veneer and other industrial materials, often employing collage principals. Expanding his range of visual techniques, instead of highlighting individual works, the artist perceives sculpture as a process in which each completed work is the starting point for the next. The works have no strictly defined message or meaning, and they are always open to the viewer’s interpretations.

In the works “Healing Sandwich” and ”Assemblage of Potato” the wall sculpture is created as an informative graphic drawing, emphasising the relationship between the contour line and the laconic form. These works are in a constant state of flirtation with the viewer, seeming to inform and offering simple signs to read, only to slip from one’s grasp and defy unambiguous interpretation, forcing the viewer to seek other associative perception techniques.
