Katrīna Neiburga

Katrīna Neiburga is one of Latvia’s leading video and multimedia artists. Her works reveal a social anthropological interest in her fellow human beings, whose everyday lives may turn into either comedy or drama in the artist’s interpretation.

In the installation “Memory of Things” Neiburga employs moments and objects from her own family life to tell the story of the lives, habits, attitudes toward themselves and their outward appearance of three generations of women. The objects in the room – an old-fashioned, three-door closet and mirror, a lamp, a chest, a bed, curtains, a bathroom mirror and a bedside table – become witnesses to the intimate feminine world from the unique viewpoint of “things.”

In the video work “Striptease” the artist performs a striptease with four different music recordings playing in the background. This is a sort of a psychoanalytical self-portrait for Neiburga, a highly “revealing” documentation of the present moment, which metaphorically demonstrates creative anxiety and mental exhaustion. As the artist comments: “I felt bad at the time and wanted to feel even worse – it was an attempt to utterly destroy myself.”
