Līga Marcinkēviča
Līga Marcinkēviča works with video and installations, and is a member of the group Famous Five (F5), which made a grand entrance onto the scene in the late 1990s. The video “I’d like to be…” was created in 2000 when the artist was working as a drawing teacher. The work gathers together her pupils’ stories about the “dream hero” they would most like to emulate. With anthropological interest, Marcinkēviča documents and creates a collective portrait of the generation born and grown up in the independent Republic of Latvia. In the work, grade 6 pupils become the standard bearers of the values and principles of the new era. In this work, through the meeting of the imaginary and the rational worlds, real life becomes an artistic event. With the hindsight of 20 years, Marcinkēviča’s work has become a symbol of time and space in 2000, a reflection of social reality and developments in that period.
I’d like to be… 2000.
