Oļa Vasiļjeva
Oļa Vasiļjeva is an internationally renowned Latvian artist whose interdisciplinary art practice encompasses sculpture, graphics, object art, videos and other media. Her works contain extensive references to artistic crafts, music, subcultures and literature.
The artist often creates ambiguous, absurd installations, in which the arrangement of elements is the key and which reveal a passion for the characteristic properties of the materials employed and their interplay with architecture. The message of the works is non-linear and often beyond logic. The visual syntax of Vasiļjeva’s installations arises from visions and dreams.
The steel sculpture “Notre Dame” is a typical example of Oļa Vasiļjeva’s art, featuring a linear, schematic anthropomorphic figure, which is seemingly embodied in a decorative grid, graphically and spatially playing with the surrounding space.
