Rasa Šmite un Raitis Šmits

Rasa un Raitis Šmits are new media artists whose work exploits the latest developments in science and technology. In 1996, they established the electronic art and new media centre E-LAB, working on many network art projects, and for many years they organised the media art festival “Māksla + Komunikācijas”. Since 2000, the centre has been called RIXC, and it has regularly hosted experimental projects expanding the significance of the visual arts in the scientific and communication sphere. Their work may be described as sсience-art, an amalgamation of science, visual and sound art. The Šmits’ works always focus on humans and the world around us, viewed through the prism of the exact sciences.

“The Atmospheric Forest” beautifully, intuitively and understandably visualises the complex relationships between nature, climate change and the atmosphere. Using the latest technologies and research data, the Šmits offer viewers a multimedial scientific assessment of ethereal organic compounds which are “breathed” by pine forests, enabling us to better understand the life of forests and the ecosystem of our planet.
